Life in Zicatela is like life in paradise. For example, let me tell you what a regular day looks like over here in La Punta de Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca (you can call it “La Punta”).
Wake up as the sun comes up, go to the beach and catch the first waves of the day.
Over here, all you really need to do is get out of bed. Then, grab your best beach outfit, and your surfboard. As instructors, we get ready for the first group of the morning. It’s 7:30 a.m. and we are checking the lists for the day’s lessons. After that, we make sure we know what levels will be taught that day. I have to say, basic lessons are always fun. But, we do enjoy working with the pros as they get to know our beaches. Zicatela is awesome. However, even the most skilled can find a surprise or two. That is, if they don’t know our beaches.
The instructors show up, talking about Puerto Escondido’s happenings last night. Sometimes one of us will mention who we ran into “the other day”. Yes, we do see each other every day, and we forget to share stories or mention very important facts.
When our students arrive, we are ready for the technical part of the lesson. And let me confess, it never gets old how ridiculous we all look paddling the invisible waves in the concrete floor. We do look like we’re doing some yoga pose while trying to balance on the imaginary surfboards. But you know what? While some may skip this part, we know for sure this is what makes the difference. Even our most advanced students have some minutes of technical work.
Once our students know what to do with their body, and learned the way the currents flow, they’re ready! We really think this is basic to surfing our waves! Plus, it’s what makes us confident to take you into the ocean, knowing we are responsible for your safety, and also for making this AWESOME!
To be honest… We just do half of the work. The waves, and the amazing natural resources around us, really do most of it. I wish you all could experience it if you haven’t already. Because, coming out to the beach, putting your board in the sand… And finally, sitting down to drink some coconut water from a fresh sliced ‘coco’ is pure bliss!
